Nedbank Accounts, Contact, Internet & Cellphone Banking

Nedbank Ltd is one of the largest banks in South Africa; however, it is one of the newest banks to be incorporated. It is headquartered in Johannesburg.

The bank was founded in 1888 in Amsterdam as the Nederlandsche Bank en Credietvereeniging voor Zuid-Afrika (“Dutch Bank and Credit Union for South Africa”).

In the same year the bank opened an office in Pretoria, South African Republic; in 1898 the bank moved its office to Church Square.

In 1903 the company was renamed to Nederlandsche Bank voor Zuid-Afrika (“Dutch Bank for South Africa”). In 1906, the bank expanded and an office in London was opened.

(Nedbank) The bank split in 1951, renaming its South African part as Nederlandse Bank in Suid-Afrika Beperk/Netherlands Bank of South Africa Limited.

The number of South African shareholders increased greatly, and in 1969 the company became 100% South African-owned after the Bank Mees en Hope sold 20 percent of its shares.

The South African part was completely independent. The Dutch part of the bank no longer exists; it’s currently part of ABN AMRO.

In 1992, the name of the bank was changed to Nedcor Bank Limited, of which Nedbank became the largest division. In 1992, Syfrets, UAL, and Nedbank Investment Bank merged to become Nedcor Investment Bank (NIB).

Old Mutual, Nedcor’s holding company, was demutualised and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1999. It became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

The Bank acquired the Isle of Man and Jersey private banking business of Robert Fleming & Co. in 2001.

The new Nedcor Group was formed on 1 January 2003, combining Nedcor, BoE, Nedcor Investment Bank, and Cape of Good Hope Bank into one legal entity.

The Nedcor Group was renamed the Nedbank Group on 6 May 2005. The Bank headquarters are in Sandton, South Africa.

In August 2009, The group bought the remaining 49.9% of Imperial Bank South Africa, which is now fully owned by this group.

Nedbank South Africa Internet Banking

Technical support phone scams
There is currently a scam that involves people posing as representatives from the Bank or IT companies such as Microsoft. The fraudsters contact you and offer to help you solve a computer problem or try to sell you a software licence.

The fraudsters will then ask you to access a website or click on a link, which will allow them to access your computer.

They will claim that they can do the repairs or download the software you purchased. Once they have you on the line or have access to your computer they will be able to do any or all of the following:

Trick you into installing malicious software which not belong to Nedbank that captures sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords. They might also then charge you to remove this software.

Take control of your computer remotely and adjust your security settings to leave your computer vulnerable.

Request credit card information so they can bill you for repairs or software ordered.

Direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information on these websites.

If you have allowed such a company access to your computer, your online security has probably been breached and you need to do the following urgently:

Phone the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0860 555 111 to have your internet banking credentials reset.

Protect yourself from telephone technical support scams

Never give a third party control of your computer unless you can confirm that he/she is a legitimate representative of a computer support team of a company at which you are already a customer.

An IT company will never call you to request to do repairs on your computer or sell you software.

Never provide your Nedbank credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from the technical support team of an IT company, such as Microsoft.

Ensure that your computer antivirus software is up to date. It is important for you to note that normal antivirus software, while important, is not enough protection, and if you have allowed the fraudsters access to your computer, you will need to have your computer professionally cleaned, preferably reformatted, before using it again.

Nedbank South Africa Atm Machines & Locations

ATM Fraud
When you use an ATM, it is important always to be alert and aware of your surroundings so that you do not compromise your card or PIN.

Shoulder surfing and card swapping are just some of the dangers you face when transacting at an ATM. Protecting yourself starts with being aware of how and when you’re targeted.

Tips to avoid ATM fraud
Assess the ATM and its surrounding area. Make sure your ATM is in a well-lit area and that no one is loitering around the machine.

Be ready with your ATM card. Have your ATM card ready when you approach the machine to avoid opening your wallet while queuing.

Don’t be distracted. Don’t let anyone or anything distract you from your transaction, even by perfectly friendly people offering assistance or asking for the time or directions.

Recognise a proper-looking Nedbank ATM. If you know what an ATM looks like, you’re better able to identify any foreign objects attached to it.

Make sure the card slot hasn’t been tampered with. In fact, never force your card into the ATM slot. Rather use another machine.

Don’t believe hoaxes. Keying in your PIN backwards at an ATM will not call the police. These are simply scams to get you to divulge your PIN.

Nedbank is on call. If you suspect foul play, or your card has been retained by an ATM, call 0800 110 929 to report it, or call the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0860 555 111.
